ARTISANS

FOR HUICHOLES, RELIGION IS LIFE ITSELF
AND THEIR GODS ARE THE FORCES OF NATURE.

While many Huicholes follow the spiritual path to become shamans or mara´ákames, others become artisans. They prepare for 5 years to receive astika, which means “good luck from the gods,” to create beautiful designs in beadwork, weaving, embroideries and yarn paintings and make a living out of it. Mostly inspired by their dreams and visions when taking peyote and their surrounding environment, these masters of color create meaningful designs with stunning patterns and complex symbols to tell the stories of who they are and express the beauty of their spirit world.
